The Next Door is dedicated to helping women in crisis, equipping them to develop lives of wholeness and hope. The Next Door addresses the physical, mental, spiritual and life skills needs of women and their children in two locations in Nashville, Tennessee., as well as new locations in Chattanooga and Knoxville. Since May 2004, almost 700 women have had the opportunity at our original location in Downtown Nashville to experience a six-month curriculum designed to prepare them for living independently and establishing stable families. The Residential Transitional Center on Eighth Avenue South provides a safe and secure environment for up to 40 participants at a time, who come by referral primarily from incarceration and also from rehabilitation centers or homelessness. In Summer 2007, The Next Door opened a second location at the Freedom Recovery Community at 2100 Clifton Avenue in Nashville. This permanent housing complex provides 20 units for safe, affordable living for women and their children. The Next Door's newest location is the Knoxville Residential Transitional Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, which opened its doors on February 17, 2010. The Next Door's Chattanooga Residential Transitional Center is anticipated to open in April 2010. Recovery support services at The Next Door's three Residential Transitional Centers and at the Freedom Recovery Community include addressing issues surrounding addiction and mental health and are offered in an integrated model to deal with these co-occurring disorders. Licensed professional counselors meet individually and in groups with residents. Life skills instruction furthers each resident's opportunity for finding and keeping living wage employment. Family reunification sessions focus on the future establishment of stable families and on breaking the destructive cycle of poor decisions, addiction, and incarceration. Residents may choose from a variety of life issues discussions or Bible study classes on a weekly basis.
