Clothing Closet Donation Guidelines

We are blessed with many friends who support the women of The Next Door with generous donations of clothing, shoes and accessories! Your gifts are an important part of the transformation and recovery of our residents. In an effort to keep our Clothing Closet organized and adequately supplied with the most needed items, please note our specific needs and adhere to the following guidelines for all donations to our Clothing Closet:

  • Only clean, in season clothing in gently used condition will be accepted. Please discard any items with stains, rips, tears, holes or significant shrinking.
  • Clothing must be machine washable. Residents are unable to use “dry clean only” items.
  • It is most helpful for clothing to arrive on a hanger, but not mandatory.
  • Please provide clothing that is in current fashion. Our ladies, like all of us, feel much more confident in up-to-date styles.
    • Be mindful that our residents are generally between 25 and 40 years of age.
    • Please refrain from donating revealing or low-cut items.
  • We are most in need of clothing from sizes 12 to 20. If you have items in smaller sizes that you wish to donate, please mention this specifically when making arrangements to drop off items at The Next Door in order for us to help you know our current needs.
  • Clothing items that are always most needed are:
    • Blue jeans
    • Khaki or black slacks (cotton preferred)
    • White button down blouses
    • Casual tops & sweaters
    • Coats in winter
    • Sturdy work shoes & tennis shoes
    • Casual flats (most of our ladies walk to work & church)
    • Current styles of pocketbooks
    • NEW panties, bras, and socks (Please do not donate used bras, panties or socks)
  • Most dressy clothing items are needed only in very limited quantities. If you wish to donate any of the following items, please ask specifically about our current needs for these items when making arrangements to drop off items at The Next Door:
    • Business suits
    • Dressier occasion dresses & suits
    • Blazers
    • Dress slacks and trousers
    • High-heels or dress shoes

Donations of clothing, shoes, and accessories will only be accepted with prior arrangements. Please do not drop off donations unannounced at The Next Door. To arrange a date and time to drop off your items, please contact Lucretia Mobbs at 251-8805, ext. 219 or Lucretia.Mobbs@thenextdoor.org.
